What is flooring?

Flooring describes materials used for the permanent covering of a floor, be it originally constructed of wood, cement, or other building materials. Flooring can be made up of specially treated wood, laminate wood material, tile sections, or synthetic materials such as vinyl.

Flooring is sometimes used interchangeably with the name floor covering, although technically “flooring” is often used to describe wood flooring, laminated wood, ceramic tile, stone, and coated foundations. “Floor covering” on the other hand often describes loosely laid (and installed) materials that can be replaced such as carpet, rugs, linoleum, and vinyl flooring.
