What is a fan?

An electric fan uses a motor powered by either direct current (DC) or alternating current (AC) voltage to move air for the purpose of cooling a room and people in a home or building. Fans cool on the principle of heat transfer called convection cooling, meaning they effectively cool a surface by blowing air across it, removing some heat as the air does so.

Fans are available in a wide array of designs for different purposes, budgets, and power capabilities. Box fans are one of the most common (and often used in home windows to reduce energy use costs versus using air conditioning). Other such as pedestal fans move air directly in certain directions as well as move back and forth via an oscillation feature.
