How to Clean Refrigerator Condenser Coils
Your refrigerator is a constant and hardworking appliance in your kitchen. A simple maintenance task is all you need to keep this crucial tool running at its best. Here are the step-by-step directions on how to clean fridge condenser coils.
1. Remove Power and Move It for More Space
As with all projects involving electricity, you must first unplug the refrigerator. Do not attempt to clean refrigerator coils without unplugging the appliance first.
Once the refrigerator is disconnected from its power supply, wiggle the appliance away from the wall, so you have room to work. You will need to be able to move freely around all sides of the fridge in order to do this job.
Don’t worry about the food spoiling because the refrigerator is unplugged. This job only takes about 15 minutes and will go even faster the more you practice!
2. First Cleaning (Vacuum Cleaner)
Now you are ready to clean coils. The refrigerator condenser coil is often found at the front of the appliance, under a removable panel. If you have an older fridge, the refrigerator condenser coil will be visible in the back, as metal tubes that are arranged in a U-shape.
Grab your vacuum cleaner to first remove the large pieces of debris from the fridge coils. This may be dust bunnies, clumps of animal hair, or other items that the vacuum can easily suck up.
3. Use a Brush to Clean By Hand
After the vacuum has cleared some of the larger bits on the dirty condenser coils, find a stiff coil brush for condenser fins and condenser coil cleaning. You may have an appliance brush, or an old toothbrush can also work in a pinch.
4. Final Vacuuming
Use a vacuum hose attachment again to polish the clean coils. You can also brush away any more dirt and debris with a can of compressed air.
5. Put Everything Back in Place
Once the dirty coils have been transformed into clean condenser coils, return the refrigerator to its former place and plug it back in. That’s all you need to know how to clean fridge condenser coils.
What Happens if Refrigerator Coils are Dirty?
The job of a refrigerator condenser coil is to circulate cooled air throughout the entire appliance. This provides a temperature-controlled environment, so food doesn’t spoil prematurely. Dirty condenser coils must work much more challenging and do not do their job effectively.
What are the Symptoms of a Dirty Condenser Coil?
A dirty condenser coil happens naturally, as the fridge coils are tucked away and can easily attract dust and dirt. When the appliance cannot maintain a consistent, cool temperature, a condenser coil cleaning is needed.
Can I Clean AC Coils with Just Water?
If you decide to perform condenser coil cleaning with water, choose a detergent with low acidity and a low-pressure washing technique. The metal parts inside the refrigerator are delicate and can rust if the solution is too acidic or become bent if the water pressure is too high.
How Often Should I Clean My Refrigerator Coils?
For the highest energy efficiency from your refrigerator’s compressor and fridge coils, clean condenser coils at least once per year. If you have pets that shed, it is recommended to clean coils twice per year.
Does Cleaning Refrigerator Coils Save Energy?
Yes! Clean refrigerator coils are a simple thing that can improve your appliance’s energy efficiency. The refrigerator will save energy because the fridge works less to keep its cool temperature.
